About

Amano is a multidisciplinary artist based in Co. Kerry, Ireland. She is a singer, poet and songwriter working English and Irish (Gaeilge). Born in Kyūshū and raised in Kerry, her work is informed by her Irish and Japanese heritage, an animist worldview, and academic studies in religions, political science and cultural heritage.

In 2024 Amano is due to release a collaborative electronic Irish language project entitled Thread with Cork-based producer Kalabanx (Garry McCarthy). She is also working on her solo creative practice in the sean-nós singing tradition and new original compositions in the alternative folk genre. She is also providing bilingual voice acting for film and screen media productions.

Amano is currently training in ‘Nihon Buyō’ (classical Japanese dance) with US based Japanese-choreographer, Kazuko Kaya Yamazaki Ph.D. In May 2024 Amano will undertake a two week writing retreat as the artist in residence at Direenacappera with support from Kerry County Council Arts.

Amano is a former awardee of the UCC Puttnam Scholarship (2022) through which she enjoyed mentorship in creative collaboration from Oscar-winning producer Lord David Puttnam. She is also a member of artists’ collective VisionÉire and a contributor to Irish Artists for Palestine. Her recent performances have included Cork World Book Festival, UNESCO Dublin City of Literature Slamovision, Brigid 1500, Hidden Hearth Festival and Notes of Hope for Palestine.

Amano’s poetry and writing has been published by Good Day Cork (2023), Channel Magazine (2023), Motley Magazine (2022, 2021), and Garland Realm (2020). She is currently sharing written work via ‘always an islander‘ on Substack.

In 2024 Amano and Conchobhar Ruadh launched their one-of-a-kind workshop Nós Nua, a safe space where participants are guided through an exploration of Irish language loss, decolonisation, trauma and healing through the lens of sean-nós singing.
